Certifying a product for hazardous areas is a well-trodden path, but it rarely feels that way from inside a first-time project. Timelines stretch, test houses ask for documents nobody has written, and the finish line seems to move. It doesn't have to be that way. Here's the roadmap we walk manufacturers through - and the places where projects most often stall.
Stage 1: Strategy and gap analysis
Before anything is tested, two questions need honest answers: which markets are you selling into (which decides whether you need ATEX, IECEx or both - see our guide to the difference), and how far is your current design from the applicable IEC 60079 requirements? A structured gap analysis at this stage is the single highest-value week in the whole programme.
Stage 2: Design for the protection concept
Every Ex product is built around a protection concept - flameproof, increased safety, intrinsic safety and so on. The concept dictates materials, clearances, creepage, temperature behaviour and marking. Locking this down early matters because changing concept mid-project effectively restarts the clock.
Stage 3: The technical file
This is where projects stall most often. Drawings, material declarations, ratings calculations, user instructions, marking layouts - the certification body needs a coherent file, not a folder of attachments. Assembling it well the first time routinely saves months of question-and-answer cycles.
Test houses don't certify products. They certify evidence. Build the evidence like the product depends on it - because it does.
Stage 4: Assessment and testing
With a solid file, the formal assessment and type testing becomes the predictable part: samples are tested against the standards, findings are raised, the design is refined where needed. Good liaison with the test house - knowing what they need before they ask - keeps this stage moving.
Stage 5: Certificate, marking and beyond
The certificate is not quite the end. Production has to keep matching what was certified (quality assurance requirements apply), markings must be exactly right, and any future design change needs assessing against the certificate before it ships. Plan for life after the certificate from day one.
