ATEX vs IECEx: what's actually the difference?

Few pairs of acronyms cause more confusion in hazardous area work than ATEX and IECEx. They overlap heavily, they reference the same technical standards, and equipment is frequently certified under both - so it's no surprise that even experienced operators use them interchangeably. They aren't interchangeable, and knowing where each applies can save you real money and real delay.

ATEX: a legal requirement in Europe

ATEX is shorthand for the European Union's legal framework covering equipment for explosive atmospheres - most relevantly Directive 2014/34/EU, which governs equipment placed on the EU market. If you manufacture or sell Ex equipment into the EU, ATEX compliance is not optional: it is the law, and the CE marking on the product depends on it.

IECEx: a passport for the rest of the world

IECEx is not legislation. It's a voluntary international certification scheme run under the IEC, built directly on the IEC 60079 series of standards. Its value is recognition: an IECEx certificate is accepted, or at least heavily leveraged, by regulators and operators across many countries, which makes it the closest thing the Ex world has to an international passport.

ATEX tells you what you must do to sell in Europe. IECEx tells the rest of the world your equipment can be trusted.

Where they overlap - and where they don't

  • Technical content: both rest on the IEC/EN 60079 series, so the engineering requirements are largely aligned.
  • Legal force: ATEX is mandatory in the EU; IECEx is voluntary but commercially expected in many markets.
  • Geography: ATEX covers the EU (and is referenced beyond it); IECEx acceptance spans much of the world, though some jurisdictions - notably North America with its NEC 500 & 505 framework - maintain their own schemes.
  • Paperwork: the certificates, marking requirements and conformity routes differ, even where the engineering is identical.

So which one do you need?

It depends on two questions: where you operate, and where you sell. A manufacturer targeting Europe needs ATEX. One selling globally will usually want IECEx alongside it - the shared standards mean much of the assessment work can be done once and used twice. An operator, meanwhile, needs to know which framework their site's inspection and documentation regime is being audited against.
